CNCI JOIN HANDS WITH NCE AND SLSI TO ASSIST INDUSTRIES
IN HACCP/ISO 22000 AND SA 8000 STANDARDS |

The Ceylon National Chamber of Industries and National Chamber
of Exporters, Sri Lanka in association with Sri Lanka Standards
Institution has embarked on a project to provide assistance
to Sri Lankan Enterprises in setting Food Safety Management
Systems (HACCP/ISO 22000) as per ISO 22000 standards, and
developing National capacity for compliance with the SA 8000
Social Accountability standards.
It is a project launched by the United Nations Industrial
Development Organization (UNIDO) and funded by a special donor
trust fund assigned to UNIDO by the Government of Norway through
the Norwegian Development Agency (NORAD).
The project is viewed as an important public private partnership
towards improving the quality and ensuring safety of processed
food and also to ensure social accountability of the local
industry with regard to workers welfare in Sri Lankan industry.

A
media briefing was held on 15th December 2006 at the CNCI
Auditorium, Colombo 03 to announce the formation of new certification
body for ISO 22000 and SA 8000. The press briefing was attended
by the Chairman, CNCI Mr. A.K. Ratnarajah and the Members
of the Board of Management, Mr.Kulatunga Rajapakse, Chairman,
NCESL and officials of NCESL. Dr. A.R.L. Wijesekera, Chairman
SLSI and the Director General of SLSI, Mrs. Shirani Weragoda
was associated at this media briefing. UNIDO was represented
by Dr. Lalith Goonatilake, Director, Trade Capacity Building
Branch, Mr. Gerardo Patacconi, Industrial Development Officer,
Trade Capacity Building Branch, Mr. Nihal Abeysekera, National
Project Director, Mr. Ali Badarneh, National Coordinator and
Trainer, Ms. U. Muge Dolun, Associated Industrial Development
Officer and Mr. Sarath Abeysundera, National Project Coordinator.

A
40 hour training program was held from 16th - 20th December
2006 at the Renuka Hotel, Colombo 03 for 22 selected consultants
who will assist the local Companies to raise the standard
of their production processes to reach conformity with HACCP/ISO
22000 standards. The consultants were trained by Mr. Ali Badarneh
of UNIDO and coordinated by Ms. Roshini Gunaratne of CNCI
and Mr. Sarath Abeysundera of UNIDO Colombo Office.

A
full day seminar was also held on 18th December 2006 at the
Taj Samudra Hotel under the patronage of Hon. Kumara Welgama,
Minister of Industrial Development and Hon. Prof. Tissa Vitarana,
Minister of Science and Technology attended by over 100 representatives
from leading industrial establishments, trade chambers and
business community to mark the launch of this prestigious
project. Dr. Bernardo Calzadilla-Sarmiento, Director, Technical
Assistance and Training Services, International Organization
for Standardization (ISO), Geneva also participated at this
seminar.
It is expected that the consultants trained
on HACCP/ISO 22000 will take over minimum of 10 industrial
establishments to assist them to reach the required ISO standards
as the initial pilot project.
At a time the Government is emphasizing on
productivity improvement in all sectors to be competitive
locally and globally the CNCI initiative together with NCESL
and SLSI in this important project is expected to bring many
benefits to the Country in general and to the industrial sector
in particular.
